Snow Globe Lamp

Entering the world of discovery and experimentations. Making use of the readily available paper products and woven string to kick start the process of the lamp making.

Key Learning Points:

  • Discovering new materials

  • Documentation of experiments

  • Understanding various ways of material fabrication

  • Exploring each material's unique quality

Rough sketch of the lamp

Every idea comes from a source of inspiration and for mine, it is the image of a snow globe as the brief was a table lamp. The lamp shade had to demonstrate "Lightness" and "Strength" for the base.

Working with materials

I have selected tracing paper and cotton acrylic blend yarn along with white glue for my table lamp making journey. I decided to use the rubber ball as a mould for my lamp shade in order to achieve a perfect spherical shade.

After shredding the tracing paper and pulling apart the cotton acrylic blend yarn, the next step is having to combine them with white glue and water.

After mixing the materials together, place the mixture onto a rubber ball that is covered with plastic cling wrap.

Once the rubber ball is covered with the mixture of materials, remember to leave an opening at the bottom for the light bulb stand to be fitted through, followed by allowing the shade to dry outdoors form about 2-3 days.

Once the lamp shade is dried, use a pair of scissors to puncture the rubber ball and the lamp shade is created.

Lamp base making #1

Preparing materials needed for the making of the base: Torn up 1 layer of cardboard, cotton cord and a plastic container wrapped with plastic cling wrap.

Once mixture is placed and covering 1/3 of the container, allow it to dry outdoors for about 2 days.

Lamp base making #6

Using a lighter to melt the plastic container, followed by taking a scissors to bend the plastic container till it can be removed easily from the lamp base.

Lamp base making #7

Create a hole at the top part of the base for the light bulb holder to be fitted through.

Once the light bulb holder is fitted in, create a hole for the cable to be put through and cover the hole with the extra cardboard mixture. Leave it to dry outdoor for 1 day.

Using the remaining cardboard mixture to create a small raised platform to keep the lamp shade in place.
